Trumpeter Freddie Dunn, Jr. was born and raised in northern New Jersey, and cut his eye teeth in the frenetic music scene of New York and New Jersey in the late eighties. After returning to Maryland to finish work on his degree in classical trumpet he has become a fixture in the Baltimore-Washington music circuit. He has traversed the world a few times over with the bands Fertile Ground, The New Volcanoes, and his own Indigruuv.He is prominently featured on the current Lafayette Gilchrist & The New Volcanoes CD, “Soul Progressin’”, which garnered 4 stars (out of 5) in Downbeat Magazine and has the solo turn on the title tune which is featured on the last episode of the final season of the critically acclaimed cable series “The Wire”. He is a member of the groundbreaking soul-jazz outfit, Fertile Ground, and appears on their last three discs: “Black Is…”, “Seasons Change”, and their seminal CD, “Spiritual War”. His trumpet and flugelhorn work can be heard on diverse musical projects from the dance music of the Basement Boys (“The Kasbah”, “Til I Found You”) to Hip Hop (“Give Me The Jazz”) to the straight ahead of Indigruuv, to the Jazz Funk Avant Garde fusion of the New Volcanoes. He is an active freelancer and studio call musician and performs actively in the DC Baltimore corridor and beyond. A believer in the jazz cause and  in taking the music to the people Freddie has recently involved himself in organizing and performing various shows in MD DC and VA. His band and solo shows have garnered notice from the Washington Post, Express, and The DC Examiner. With his latest endeavor, Save the Jazz, he hopes to raise awareness, listenership and interest in Jazz music of all stripes here in Baltimore city.Having made Washington D.C. his home since 2011 he has added teaching to the many musical endeavors he now pursues. As part of the Baltimore Jazz Educators Project he instructed students in trumpet, trombone and jazz. As the director of bands at City Neighbors Charter School he planted the seeds for a successful band and music education program while exposing his children to high caliber jazz on record and live. He now maintains an active teaching studio and conducts clinics and band days in the capitol area.
